tarpaper shack & tent
When we got to Toole there was no place for us to live. We did not pay the rent and the owner rented the house while we were gone. A friend of Buds (Bigley) sold him a tarpaper shack, which was one big room, right across from his house in a pasture. I had him board up the tent that we had on one end of the shack, then we partition it into two bedrooms. Dorothy was born in that tent. Jan 18, 1930. Bernice was staying with us when Dorothy was born. Dorothy was born on Bernice birthday. Bigley got a chance to sell his pasture for a sandpit, so we had to move again. Martha and Clad came to stay with us till spring, then they left, Preston, Marvin came to stay. They stay with us that summer.

“While Preston was there, he carved Toots some toy furniture. Dorothy would sit on his lap”.

Bud smoke cigars, and Johnny wanted to smoke one, I finally got tried of fighting with him and gave him a cigar and it made him sick, I thought I had killed him.

Johnny wanted Bernice and I to go Halloween with him, I said I would if he would do everything that I asked him to do, he said he would. I had them dress in white sheets. First I had him dump overt a trashcan, he did it but he did not want too. Then we went out to the outskirts of town. We start to push over an outhouse. When this guy came out and started shooting at us. Johnny and Toots lit out a running and all you could see was white sheets and Bernice. I yelled at them, and told them that he would not shoot us, he was just trying to scare us, he heard me and put a shot just over our heads. By the time I caught up to the kids, they were fanatic and I had to calm them down. That was the last of our Halloween.
