That winter, Bernice and I went rabbit hunting with Bud and Jack. My legs were getting to where I could not feel them and she said that hers was too. I told Bernice that I was going back to car. By the time we get to the car we could hardly walk. There was a big heavy blanket in the car and we wrapped our legs up. My legs were black and blue and peeled for two weeks. We almost froze our legs off.

Toots and Johnny had to walk to school. One day I had the urge to go to the front door, so I did go to the front door and I yelled at Johnny to duck and get under the fence, I do not know why I yelled at Johnny to duck but I did. He bent down and a bullet went right over his head, if he had not ducked he would have been hit.

We went to visit papa and mama, Bernice came with us and she went to stay with Don and Maggie. Preston, Marvin, Jack and Clara went back to Texas. While we were visiting, we were talking and were not paying any attention to the children; all at once I jump up and went outside. Right by their house was a canal and when I get out there, I could see Guss head bobbing up and down in the water, I waded in and got him out.
