mirage

a long road
We started on the road to Texas, along in the evening. Don drive for quite awhile then I drive all night long. Daylight came and Don and I were driving along and Don started to laugh and I asked him what he was laughing about, he said that I was trying to miss every turtle on the road. Little turtle were crossing the road and I was trying to miss them, I did not want to run over them, I never notice what I was doing. He laughed and said that you can not miss all the turtles. We went on down the road and I said to Don we are going to run into a lake down here pretty soon, Don laugh and said that what you think, I said yes we are I can see ducks on it. You get down and you will see; he was right it was nothing but a mirage.

“You could see more mirages,
some had ships on them, some ducks”.

When we get into Texas. They had buried Buds mother the same day that she died, it was so hot that they could not hold her over. We stayed there about a week. I went to one of their dances and I ate biscuits and gravy. Buds father Preston, Jack and Clara, Bob and Bernice wanted to come back with us. They had a big Ford truck that they had to get ready. Don decided that he would bring us women back and let Bud, his dad and the boys bring the big truck. We were in a hurry to get home; I left my children with mama. Maggie had left her children with mama. Mama had her hands full so Don took us on home. We stayed there until the men came. Bud and I had to go get our car in Rifle. Then we went on to Toole.

expecting dorothy
That was a very hot trip, she died in April, no air condition in the cars back then. I did not feel good on that trip. I find out after we get back that I was pregnant with Dorothy.
