kate's sunday school

That summer I started a little Sunday school for my children. My children started telling their friends about it and it was not long before I had a house full of other children for Sunday school. I needed to find a place that we could have Sunday school in.
The Post Office lady told me about a house that was empty. She said I could have it for Sunday school. I got a piano from someone but I can not remember who it was. Had a cross-made that put on the top of the porch. The first morning I had Sunday school in the house, all the ladies and some men, and the school teachers came. We had the Sunday school for five years. Then a church from Denver wanted me to take collections and they would come out and preach and I would not do it.
We had mother’s day programs and Christmas parties. Johnny and Toots would play the mandolin and the guitar. They would sing. I played the piano. I also had another lady that would play the piano at the programs.
“ Some time the house was not big enough to hold all the people that came to the programs.”
One time at a mother’s day program, I had Toots and Johnny sing “Life Railroad to Heaven”. I looked around the room and all the older ladies were crying. At another mother’s day program, I had Bud sing “Mother McGree”. I had Guss recite “When mother put up her hair.”
“There was a logger who would come down once a month and leave money at the Post Office for the church. I used that money to buy material for Sunday school”.
grandpa bud sang this celtic song for mothers day, 'mother mccree'.

  1. wow. grandma could play piano, and speak sign language. Grandpa bud could sing. Johnny and toots could play guitar and mandolin. They had a voice in their community. And the logger support monetarily support it.

  2. railroad to heaven

Life is like a mountain railroad
    With an engineer that's brave
We must make the run successful
From the cradle to the grave

Watch the curves, the fills, and tunnels
    Never falter, never fail
Keep your hand upon the throttle
And your eyes upon the rail

Blessed Savior, Thou will guide us
Till we reach that blissful shore
Where the angels wait to join us
    In that great forevermore

As you roll across the trestle,
    Spanning Jordon’s swelling tide.
    You’ll behold the Union Depot
into which your train will glide.

    You’ll meet the superintendent,
God the Father, God the Son.
    With a hearty joyous greetings:
    "Weary Pilgrims Welcome Home"
