I am kind of mix up on things for the next three years. I know Toots stayed with Edith one summer. Johnny made trouble in school and there were something in the weeds that keep his eyes swelled up, so he went to Rangely to stay with Don. Johnny came home from Dons. Johnny got some money somewhere and bought a ford truck with the back end out of it. He pulled it up in the front yard to work on. I do not know where he got the parts, but I help him fix the old truck.

I do not now remember where Bud had been working, but he had given us some money and I figure I needed to lay up some flour, sugar, and lord for the winter. We took a trip to Loveland to buy winter groceries; we went over Trail Ridge pass, 1300 feet high. On our way back we had the little pickup and trailer packed high with groceries and we were driving along the road when Johnny pulled off the road and stop. He never said a word but got out of the car and went over to an old fence and broke off a piece of that fence wire. He tied it to the trailer and pickup, got in the truck and drove on. I said to him, that old rusty wire would not hold anything. As we got higher in the mountain, we ran into one of the biggest hailstorm that I ever saw, Johnny could not see the road so he pulled into a man,s yard. The man brought a canvas to cover the groceries and invited us into his home. He turned out to be a painter; he had the most beautiful paintings around his house I ever saw.
After it cleared up we left for home. On our way down the mountain pass, the car starts going to fast. Johnny hit the brake and the wheels locked. We started sliding down the road sideways. I thought ‘here goes nothing’. We were about to go over the side of the mountain. I am not sure just what happened then. I think the trailer came lose from the hitch and it jackknife. But anyhow the truck and trailer came to a stop. We get out to look things over, and you know what, all that was holding the trailer on the road was that old Rusty wire that Johnny had put on it. We made it home and the next day or so Johnny packed his things in the pickup and went to Rangely to stay with Don and go to school. I never saw him again till the war was over. He joined the army.
