Bud came home in April, tried to find the cows, horses and was told they had died during the winter. He never stayed long enough to find out the truth. He stayed a couple of weeks then got a job on the construction at Maybell. Then afterwards we saw the two horses, Nip and Tuck, somebody was driving them, but we was on foot and we could not run them down.
johnny learns to drive
I stayed in Vernal until school was out; Bud sent me some money. I fixed up the Buick and filled the car with gas, loaded the car with bedding and the kids clothes. With Johnny helping me, we drive to Maybell. We left Vernal about 3 and got to Maybell just at dark. Johnny had not driven a car very much, he almost wreck us a couple of times by going to fast around the curves. But we survived; he gave us a good scare.
